The problem

Taking attendance eats time in every university class: calling names, passing lists around, adding latecomers. In large courses that's several minutes per session, and the lists still miss anyone who leaves early.

What it does

FaceAttend takes attendance with a camera. Administrators set up students, teachers and classes in a React web interface and assign them to each other. During a class, the system recognises students by their face and records when each one arrives and when they leave. Teachers see who is there and who is missing without calling a single name.

The Python service recognises faces in the camera image, matches them to the students of the current class and stores arrivals and departures in MariaDB.

Lessons

Face recognition works quickly in a test setup. In a real room, lighting, camera angle and distance decide how well it works. A recognised face also only counts as attendance once it's matched to the right class at the right time, so the matching logic needed as much care as the recognition itself.

Biometric data is especially sensitive. Consent, access and storage have to be planned from the start, not added later.
